Santa Clara, BYU share Geiberger Invite title

Santa Clara shared its third title of the season with BYU, and Alex Lee of Fresno State took home the individual crown in the Al Geiberger Invitational on the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West in La Quinta.

The Broncos (pictured) posted a score of 296-276-284—856, 8-under-par, while BYU finished at 290-284-282—856.

“It was a four-team race,” Coach Rob Miller of Santa Clara said. “The last few holes are pretty tough. They aren’t birdie holes. We played them really well and that allowed us to win the tournament.

“We ended the season strong and the guys are playing with a lot of confidence heading into (the West Coast Conference Tournament next week.”

Loyola Marymount was third at 289-280-289—858, followed by Fresno State at 291-276-292—859, UC Santa Barbara at 290-292-282—864 and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo at 294-286-290—870.

University of San Diego was seventh at 291-296-289—876, followed by Florida Gulf Coast at 299-286-294—879, Pacific at 295-286-305—886 and Cal State Northridge at 297-297-294—888.

Menlo finished 12th at 300-325-306—931.

Lee, a junior from Sacramento, claimed his first victory as a Bulldog by carding a score of 68-68-73–209, 7-under, while Hayden Shieh of Santa Clara was second at 72-70-68—210, followed by his Broncos teammate Derek Ackerman, who finished at 71-71-69—211.

“Alex played really solid today,” Santa Clara Coach Chad Spencer said. “I’m so proud of him and how he has played the last few events. This may open the flood gates for him.”

Nick Swanson of UC Santa Barbara was fourth at 71-72-69—212, while Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount shot 70-71-72—213 to tie for fifth with Patrick Fishburn of BYU, who finished at 71-73-69—213, Grant Renegar of Florida Gulf Coast, who wound up at 72-68-73—213, and Peter Kuest of BYU, who came in at 74-68-71—213.

Nick Engelhardt of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo totaled 75-71-68—214 to tie for ninth with Matthew McCarty of Santa Clara, who finished at 73-67-74—214, Justin Egelske of Loyola Marymount, who shot 73-68-73—214, and Rhett Rasmussen of BYU, who wound up at 73-70-71—214.

Dalton Hankamer led the University of San Diego in 13th at 69-77-69—215, Felix Mory of Cal State Northridge tied for 14th at 75-68-73—216, and Davis Harris of Menlo tied for 51st at 74-77-77—228.

Rounding out the scoring for co-champion Santa Clara were Zackary Kaneshiro in a tie for 29th at 72-77-71—220, Jack Avrit tied for 44th at 84- 68-73—225, Michiel Eyre tied for 60th at 80-74-78—232, and William DelBiaggio tied for 64th at 80-75-79—234.
