Sofie Babic of Sacramento State claimed the first victory of her college career and led the Hornets to their third straight title by a whopping 22 strokes in the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz.
Sacramento State posted the best score in school history in round one and recorded a score of 279-287-288—854, 10-under-par, while New Mexico State was second at 295-285-296—876, followed by San Francisco at 294-298- 285—877, Santa Clara at 286-297-299—882 and UTEP at 291-299-296—886.
In their two previous tournaments, the Hornets won the Fresno State Classic and the Sacramento State Invitational.
Cal State Northridge posted a score of 296-298-294—888 to tie for sixth with Rutgers, which finished at 292-294-302—888, while Wyoming was eighth at 294-302-296—892, Nevada at 298-298-297—893, and Portland State at 300- 307-289—896.
Babic, a sophomore from Sweden, finished in the top five for the seventh time in her career with a score of 71-71-69—211, 5-under, tying the school record for the lowest 54-hole total.
Astha Madan shot 70-72-72–214 to tie for second with her Sacramento State teammate, Julia Becker, who finished at 70-72-72—214, and Dominique Galloway of New Mexico State, who wound up at 73-70-71—214.
Pun Chanachai of New Mexico State totaled 75-65-75—215 to tie for fifth with Hailey Hoagland of Montana, who wound up at 71-72-72—215, Hannah Alberto of Sam Houston State, who finished at 73-74-68—215, and Valeria Mendizabal of UTEP, who came in at 70-73-72—215.
Kristin Le of Santa Clara shot 69-72-75—216 to tie for ninth with Lily Downs of UTEP, who wound up at 70-72-74—216.
Samantha Gong led San Francisco in a tie for 11th at 73-74-70—217 and Shenna DeLeon of Cal State Northridge tied for 25th at 74-73-74—221.
Rounding out the scoring for team champion Sacramento State were Corinne Viden in a tie for 13th at 68-75-75—218, Nishtha Madan in a tie for 25th at 74- 72-75—221, and Katie Dunaway in a tie for 91st at 85-78-74—237.
