Jeff Wilson of Fairfield, who captured the United States Senior Amateur Championship in August, doubled up in the 27th California Senior Amateur Championship.
The 55-year-old Wilson birdied the last two holes and shot 2-under-par 70 in the final round to hold off Randy Haag of Orinda by two strokes at The Preserve Golf Club https://www.santaluciapreserve.com/tom-fazio-golf-course in Carmel.
“I don’t even know how I got it done today,” said Wilson, who has won the Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur Championship three times. “I was just plain awful on the front-nine but was able to keep it just a couple over par and keep myself in it, and I just was able to hit some good shots down the stretch.
“I worked a lot harder on my game this year and obviously the extra time helped. I put the work in. It gives me confidence that I can just hang in there and know I have the shots in my bag.”
Wilson carded a winning score of 69-73-70—212, 4-under-par, while Haag finished at 70-73-71—214, and Casey Boyns of Monterey shot 77-71-71—219 to tie for third with Bruce Hanavan of San Anselmo, who finished at 71-75-73—219.
Mike Rowley of San Luis Obispo was fifth at 72-74-74—220, while John Pate of Santa Barbara, trying to win the tournament for the third time, wound up at 70-74-78—222 to tie for sixth with Scott Anderson of Danville, who wound up at 74-76-72—222, Jeff Burda of La Quinta, who finished at 76-71-75—222, and Don DuBois of Newport Beach, who came in at 74-74-74—212.
Mark Nickeas of Westlake Village shot 73-74-76—223 to tie for 10th with Craig Calkins of Manhattan Beach, who finished at 75-70-78—223.
The Northern California Golf Association claimed the Senior Cup for the eighth time in 10 years with a score of 142-149—291, 3-over, while the SCGA finished at 148-144—292 for the first two days.
Haag, Jim Knoll of Sunnyvale and Mark Morgan of Shingle Springs of the NCGA competed against Burda, Robert Funk of Canyon Lake and Craig Davis of Chula Vista, with the best two scores from each team counting both days.
