Michelle Wie withdrew after the first round of the Kingsmill LPGA Championship because of a hip injury after posting a 7-over-par 78.
Wie, the Stanford grad from Hawaii, made her only birdie on the 13th hole and finished ahead of only two golfers in the field of 144 players on the River Course at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg, Va.
“Regrettably, I need to withdraw today due to a left hip injury that has been bothering me this week,” Wie wrote in a post on Twitter. “The Kingsmill LPGA Championship is one of my favorite events and I would like to thank the tournament staff and fans for their hospitality.”
Wie, who was hampered by a finger injury late last year after winning the U.S. Women’s Open and the Lotte LPGA Classic, has not finished in the top 10 in any of her 11 tournaments on the LPGA Tour this season.
