Alyaa Abdulghany of Malaysia added another title to her impressive resume.
Abdulghany, who will be a junior at USC, shot 2-under-par 69 to win the Southern California Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship by two strokes over Amy Matsuoka of Newport Beach, Brooke Seay of San Diego and Zoe Campos of Stevenson Ranch at Newport Beach Country Club https://www.newportbeachcc.com.
“It feels real good,” said Abdulghany, who lives in Newport Beach and played at Corona del Mar High. “After the first 36 holes, I just wanted to take it one hole at a time and the wind made it tough on the front nine.
“I struggled on the front nine all week. So I knew the back nine would be my strong suit today. I played my strongest on the back nine and just told myself to go for it.”
Abdulghany, who won the 2015 CIF High School Girls’ State Championship, the 2016 California State Women’s Open, the 2017 Toyota Junior Golf World Cup and the 2018 Johor Amateur Open, posted a score of 72-71-69—212, 1-under-par, and was the only player in the field to finish under par.
Birdies on the 13th, 15th and 17th holes wrapped up the title for Abdulghany, who recently finished second the Malaysian Women’s Amateur Championship after winning the Battle at the Rock and recording four other top 10 finishes last season for USC.
Matsuoka finished at 73-69-72—214 to tie for second with Seay, who totaled 73-68-73—214 and Campos, who wound up at 71-74-69—214.
Kailie Vongasa of Diamond Bar carded a score of 71-72-72—215 to tie for fifth with Katherine Muzi of Walnut, who finished at 73-68-74—215, while Tara Finigan of Laguna Nigel shot 71-72-73—216 to tie for seven with Yurika Tanida of Japan, who came in at 72-73-71—216.
