Tringale-Day win Shootout by 1

Jason Day and Cameron Tringale gave up the outright lead, but closed with a 7-under-par 65 and held on for a one-stroke victory over defending champions Matt Kuchar and Harris English in the Franklin Templeton Shootout at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla.

The more experienced Day carried the team early in the best-ball final round, but Tringale, from Laguna Niguel, made clutch par saves on the 14th, 15th and 16th holes before sinking the deciding five-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole.

“We got off to a show start, didn’t get anything going on the front nine,” said Day, who heated up with four straight birdies early on the back nine.

“I was able to get on that birdie streak and then it was just clutch putting by Cam.”

Said Tringale, who won for the first time as a pro: “It was awesome. I guess it counts as my first pro win. I had a great teammate and this is a great event. To win it is really cool.”

Kuchar and English closed with a 62, while Billy Horschel and Ian Poulter shot 61 and finished three shots back in a tie for third with Keegan Bradley and Camilo Villegas, who also had a 61.

Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly posted the best round of the day, 60, and were another stroke back in a tie for fifth with Graeme McDowell and Gary Woodland, who came in at 66.
