NEWPORT BEACH, CALIF. – (April 18, 2016) — For the 16th year, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. and Hoag Charity Sports are extending their community outreach by providing scholarships to local graduating high school seniors. This year’s program culminates today with two local high school seniors receiving $10,000 scholarships.

This year, 13 schools in the Newport-Mesa, Irvine, and Saddleback Valley Unified school districts participated with 15 finalists selected through an extensive application and interview process. After an exhaustive review of the applicants, Clarissa Echevarria of Tustin High School and Lauren Kim of Woodbridge High School were each selected to receive the $10,000 Toshiba Classic Scholarship. Since its inception in 2000, the scholarship program has awarded $309,000 and approximately $1 million worth of laptop computers to deserving Orange County high schools and students.

Echevarria not only excels in the classroom, but also is a consummate role model in the community. An honor roll student at Tustin High School, her goal is to become a doctor to help others create a better life through health and medicine. Echevarria’s desire to help extends into the community, volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club of Tustin and as a tutor at the Tustin Library. She will be a first generation college student next fall and is planning to study Biological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.

An honor student at Woodbridge High School, Kim has earned a potential patent opportunity during her internships at the University of California, Irvine. She has a wide range of interests, including participating in Junior Classical League, but her real passion lies in competing in state and national science fairs. Kim will attend Yale University in the fall.

“The Toshiba Classic Scholarship Program is an essential part of our involvement in the tournament and reinforces our dedication to giving back to the community,” said Mark Simons, President and CEO, Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. “We couldn’t be more proud of our two recipients, Clarissa Echevarria and Lauren Kim. These young ladies set a great example to their peers given their commitment to academics and their dedication to community service.”
