Todd Leads RSM by 2, Going for 3 Straight Wins

Brendon Todd needs one more low round to make it three straight victories.

The 34-year-old Todd, who has won the last two PGA Tour events, shot a bogey-free, 8-under-par 62 despite several lip-outs to take a two-stroke lead over Webb Simpson and Sebastian Munoz of Colombia heading to the last round of the RSM Classic on the Seaside Course at Sea Island Resort www.seaislandresort.com/Golf in St. Simons Island, Ga.

“My caddie said it was like a video game out there today,” said Todd, who won the Bermuda Championship and the Mayakoba Golf Classic, and is trying to become the first player to win three straight PGA Tour events since Dustin Johnson in 2017. “I was hitting the ball well and it felt like every putt was going in.

“I’m going to get lots of rest and go out and play my game tomorrow. There’s supposed to be a cool, breezy wind tomorrow and I feel that plays right into my game.”

Todd, who shot 66-66 in the first two rounds, birdied six holes on the front nine and added two more coming home in round three while posting a 54-hole score of 18-under 194.

Simpson, the 2012 U.S. Open champion, capped a bogey-free 63 with a 28-foot birdie putt on the last hole, while Munoz, who won the Sanderson Farms Championship earlier this season, posted a flawless 66.

“I didn’t hit the ball that well yesterday, so I worked on some things and it paid off,” said Simpson, who also won the 2018 Players Championship. “I saw Todd and some of the other guys were making birdies early, so I knew I had to put up a low number.”

D.J. Trahan stumbled with two bogeys on the back nine in a 67 and is three shots back in solo fourth, while Kyoung-Hoon Lee carded a 66 and is one more down in a tie for fifth with Ricky Barnes of Stockson, who totaled 67, and 36-hole leader Tyler Duncan, who made 18 birdies for a 70.

Rookie Scottie Scheffler collected five birdies on the back nine in a 63 and is five strokes behind in a tie for eighth with Doc Redman and Brian Harman, who both shot 66, and Henrik Norlander of Sweden, who came in at 67.
