Kevin Sutherland of Sacramento and Fresno State captured the 48th TaylorMade Pebble Beach Invitational by three strokes over Martin Flores of Dallas at Pebble Beach Golf Links www.pebblebeach.com.
Sutherland, who has won six times as a pro, posted a score of 72-70-67-67—276, 12-under-par, while Flores finished at 68-69-69-73—279.
“I never want to take Pebble Beach for granted; it’s a special place,” the 55-year-old Sutherland, who also claimed the title in 2000, said in an interview with the Monterey Herald. “But I think I know the course pretty well after all these years.
“I want to stress how beautiful it is to play here. But I know it so well … experience really helps. But there may be a time I play here one day and say, ‘Well, I haven’t seen that shot before.’
“ … I won by three shots, but it was closer than the margin seems.”
Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and the Links at Spanish Bay were played by each golfer in the first three rounds, but the final round was played exclusively at Pebble after the field was cut to the low 40 players.
