Brandon Wu, a junior at Stanford, shot 6-under-par 66 at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton to capture a local qualifying event for the 118th United States Open.
Wu (pictured), the Porter Cup champion from Scarsdale, N.Y., was one of five players who advanced to sectional qualifying, as Derek Ackerman and Matthew McCarthy of Half Moon Bay and Matthew McCarthy of Scottsdale, Ariz., who both play at Santa Clara, tied for second at 69, and Alex Chin of Pleasanton and USF shot 70 to tie for fourth with Franklin Huang of Poway and Stanford.
Raymond Navis of Palm Desert, who has committed to Loyola Marymount, posted a score of 4-under 68 to share medalist honors with Spencer Fletcher of Los Altos at Andalusia Country Club in La Quinta, and Scott Heyn of Stevenson Ranch. Michael Choe of Brea and Devondeep Bling of Ridgecrest and UCLA advanced with 70s.
Evan Wright of Novato and UC Davis shot 4-under 67 to tie Tyler Raber of El Macero for the top spot at Yocha Dehe Golf Club in Brooks. Elliott Paylor of Vacaville, Ryan Williams of Sacramento and Jeff Wilson of Fairfield also moved on with 68s.
Alex Lee of Sacramento and Fresno State, the Memorial Amateur champion, carded a 6-under 66 to lead the way at Fort Washington Golf and Country Club in Fresno. Joseph Bramlett of San Jose and Nick Delio of Valencia also qualified for the next round by shooting 67s.
David Rose of Canada claimed medalist honors with a 6-under 66 on the Grove Course at Indian Ridge Country Club in Palm Desert. Max Homa of Long Beach and Cal was second at 67, while Jerry Chen of Rancho Cucamonga and Michael McCabe of Moorpark also qualified at 68, while Casey Komline of Dorset, Vt., earned the final spot available with a 69.
Nick Swanson of Isla Vista led the way with a 7-under 64 at Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine, with Guy Clauss of Newport Beach, Matt Wilson of Cypress and Bobby Nickell of San Juan Capistrano tying for second at 67. Satoru Suzuki of Lake Forest claimed the final spot at the venue with a 69.
Brennan Amirkhizi of Encino and Michael Feuerstein of San Diego recorded 3-under 69s to take medalist honors at Bermuda Dunes Country Club, while Josh Anderson of Murrieta and Allen Geiberger Jr. of Palm Desert took the last two spots at 70.
The U.S. Open will be played June 14-17 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, N.Y.
