Old Harbor Distilling Company brings local flavor to craft beverages
By Wil Barnes
In recent years, San Diego has steadily made a name for itself in the world of craft beverages. One reason for the rise to relevance of “America’s Finest City” among craft spirits enthusiasts is Old Harbor Distilling Company.
In a recent visit to the distillery and tasting room of Old Harbor, a minimalist outfit with industrial charm in the up-and-coming East Village, I caught up with owner Michael Skubic as he was busy zesting a basket of fresh limes into a steaming copper still. Anyone who knows Michael knows he is a warm and enthusiastic person with a knack for craft spirits and a passion for the stories behind them.
He cut his teeth in the growing craft beverage scene as co-founder and former head of sales for Hess Brewing. It was during his time at Hess, and through his own adventures in home brewing, that he first cultivated the idea for Old Harbor. The name is in reference to San Diego being one of the oldest natural harbors in the U.S.
A Southern California native, Skubic decided to create distilled liquors inspired by the local culture and habitat. Each of his craft beverages, from the San Miguel Gin infused with locally grown cucumbers, lime and cilantro, to his Navy Strength Rum, pays homage to the rich history and landscape of Southern California.
Since opening, Old Harbor spirits have taken California by storm. In 2015, at the Distilled San Diego Spirits & Cocktail Festival, Skubic and his team won a whopping six awards, including two Best of Division gold medals.
Old Harbor spirits are popping up on the shelves of many of San Diego’s most acclaimed restaurants and exclusive cocktail lounges. Ironside Fish & Oyster Bar has even created a signature cocktail using the San Miguel Gin — the “Skubic Diver.”
These unique Old Harbor elixirs are already appearing at golf courses throughout the state. Next time you find yourself at the 19th hole, and you want a taste of San Diego’s emerging beverage culture, ask for a classic Mai Tai made with Old Harbor’s Barrelflag Navy Strength Rum, or a crisp San Miguel & Tonic.
