Taehoon Song of Buena Park captured the 59th California State Junior Championship by two strokes over Curtis Ayres of Visalia at the Country Club of Soboba Springs https://www.soboba.com in San Jacinto.
The 17-year-old Song, who earlier this year won the AJGA Junior at Yolo Fliers, bounced back from a double-bogey 6 on the second hole of round two by carding seven birdies the rest of the way while recording a score of 67-67—134, 10-under-par.
Song, who has committed to the University of Washington, joined a champions list that includes Scott Simpson, Jerry Heard, John Cook, Bobby Clampett, Spencer Levin, Pat Perez, Rickie Fowler and Bryson DeChambeau.
Ayres finished in second at 69-67—136, while Francis Catalano of Camarillo shot 69-69—138 to tie for and Jack Smyth of Tustin, who finished at 67-71—138.
Garrett Boe of Clovis was fifth at 70-69—139, while Alexander Gibalevich of Studio City shot 71-69—140 to tie for sixth with Ryan Hartanto of San Diego, who wound up at 66-74—140.
You Seong Choi of Hacienda Heights finished eighth at 73-68—141, while Krishan Patel of San Jose posted a score of 74-68—142 to tie for ninth with Darren Chiu of Oak Park, who came in at 72-70—142.
