Sedeno, Ban play for 104th Cal Am title

Joshua Sedeno of Loomis and Shotaro Ban of San Jose will play in the 36-hole final of the 104th California Amateur Championship on Saturday at Lake Merced Golf Club in Daly City.

Ban, a senior at Cal, outlasted Huang of Poway and Stanford, 1 up, in the semifinals, and  the 17-year-old Sedeno (pictured) turned back Jamie Sprinkling of Camarillo, the 2014 California Mid-Amateur champion, 2 and 1.

Sedeno, senior at Del Oro High School in Loomis near Sacramento who has committed to SMU, made seven birdies in turning back Sprinkling, who played college golf at UC Davis.

“It was a long day,” said Sedeno, who won the Memorial Amateur last month in Sacramento. “I just stayed in my routine and took it one shot at a time. Ramie hit a lot shots when he needed to and took me to the end.

” … I’ll be ready (for the final).”

Ban was 1 down to Huang through 12 holes before winning the 13th and 14th to take the lead, then halved the last four holes to reach the final.

In the morning quarterfinals, Ban slipped past Pete Fernandez Jr. of Costa Mesa, 1 up; Huang routed Cody Blick of Danville and San Jose State, 5 and 4; Sedeno defeated Jake Knapp of Costa Mesa and UCLA, 2 and 1, and Sprinkling beat Jake Holley of Chatsworth, also by 2 and 1.
