Patrick Reed was on a high in the 7,350-foot altitude of Mexico City.
The 29-year-old Reed made three straight birdies down the stretch and held on with a bogey on the last hole to shoot 4-under-par 67 and win the WGC-Mexico Championship by one stroke over Bryson DeChambeau at Club de Golf Chapultepec.
“It’s a great feeling to put yourself in position and win on Sunday,” who won this tournament in 2014 when it was played at Doral Resort in Miami. “It’s very rewarding. I felt like I was playing good golf without winning, but it’s nice to get over the hump.
“It’s a great feeling to come back here and get my second WGC title, especially the way I played from 15 onward and got the job done. I can’t wait to get home and celebrate with my wife (Justine) and the young ones (their two children), and to bring home the trophy.
“… It’s very rewarding.”
Reed, who claimed his eighth PGA Tour victory and first since The Northern Trust last August, made three straight birdies through No. 17—the last from 17 feet—and recorded a score of 18-under 266.
DeChambeau, from Clovis in California’s San Joaquin Valley, collected seven birdies in a span of nine holes through No. 14 to build a two-stroke lead, but made a bogey at No. 17 and was passed by Reed while closing with a 65.
“The last two weeks, I contended and could have won the tournament,” said DeChambeau, who tied for fifth last week in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera. “I made an unfortunate bogey on 17 even though I hit a pretty good shot, but the wind caught it and I three-putted. I had two three-putts this week and if I don’t do that, I win.
“(Reed) is a great player and I have a lot of respect for him. It was a fun battle, very close, and I look at is as a positive.”
Third-ranked Jon Rahm of Spain birdied four of the first five holes but played the rest in even par for a 67 that left him three shots back in a tie for third with Erik van Rooyen of South Africa, who made two late birdies for a 70, while top-ranked Rory McIlroy closed with a second straight 68 and was one more down in solo fifth.
Fourth-ranked Justin Thomas, the 54-hole leader, struggled to a 73 and finished five behind in a tie for sixth with two-time WGC winner Hideki Matsuyama of Japan, who had five birdies on the back nine in a 67, and Tyrrell Hatton of England, who totaled 68.
Billy Horschel sank a six-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole to highlight a 65 and was six strokes back in a tie for ninth with Kevin Na of Diamond Bar, who had three birdies on the back nine and came in at 68.
Tenth-ranked Xander Schauffele of La Jolla and San Diego State shot a second straight 66 to tie for 14th and seventh-ranked Adam Scott of Australia, who won at Riviera last week, tied for 26th after a 70.
Defending champion and fifth-ranked Dustin Johnson posted a 70 to tie for 48th and eighth-ranked Webb Simpson tied for 61st after a 70.
