The only other time Andrew Landry held a lead at the end of a round on the PGA Tour was on the opening day of the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont, where he wound up in a tie for 15th.
The 30-year-old Landry shot 7-under-par 65 on the Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West in La Quinta to take a one-stroke lead over Jon Rahm of Spain midway through the CareerBuilder Challenge in the California Desert.
“The wind was down again,” said Landry, who has won four times as a pro, including twice on the Web.com Tour. “It’s like a dome out here. I think the wind’s supposed to be up like 10 to 20 mph or something, so I know that golf course can get a little mean, especially, those last three or four holes.
“We’re in a good spot right now. I played two good rounds of golf, bogey-free both times, and it’s just nice to be able to hit a lot of good quality shots and get rewarded when you’re making good putts.”
Landry, a three-time All-American at Arkansas who shot 63 in round one at La Quinta Country Club, posted a 36-hole score of 16-under 128.
The third-ranked Rahm, the first-round leader after a 62 at La Quinta, followed with a 67 on the Nicklaus Course, where Jason Kokrak carded the same score and is two shots back in third.
Michael Kim of Del Mar and Cal matched Zach Johnson’s 64, both recorded on the Nicklaus Course, and they are three behind in a tie for fourth with Martin Piller, who had a 67 on the Stadium Course at PGA West.
Nick Watney of Davis and Fresno State shot 67 at La Quinta and is another stroke behind in a tie for seventh with Brandon Hawkins, who had a 68 on the Nicklaus Course, and Brian Gay, who recorded a 64 at La Quinta.
Kevin Na of Diamond Bar totaled 67 on the Nicklaus Course and is five down in a tie for 10th with Beau Hossler (69 at La Quinta) of Rancho Santa Margarita, Aaron Wise (69 at La Quinta) of Lake Elsinore, Russell Knox (64 on the Nicklaus Course) of Scotland, Scott Piercy (65 on the Nicklaus Course), Adam Hadwin (67 on the Nicklaus Course) of Canada, Brian Harman (68 on the Nicklaus Course), Grayson Murray (68 at La Quinta) and Austin Cook (70 on the Stadium Course).
Defending champion Hudson Swafford is tied for 19th after a 68 on the Nicklaus Course and Phil Mickelson, a two-time winner of the tournament when it was known as the Bob Hope Classic, is tied for 67th, also after a 68 on the Nicklaus Course.
