Tim Hogarth of Northridge has to be the greatest amateur golfer Southern California has ever seen. The most decorated, without a doubt.
The 52-year-old Hogarth (pictured left) added the 2018 Los Angeles City Match Play Championship to his impressive haul, beating Richard Kim (right) of Los Angeles, 4 and 3, in the final at Rancho Park Golf Course.
Hogarth, who played at Cal State Northridge, won the tournament for the second time after claiming the title in 2013. He also has won the Los Angeles City Championship a record seven times.
In addition, Hogarth captured the 1996 United States Public Links Championship, won four straight Southern California Golf Association Mid-Amateur titles from 2007-10, took the Pasadena City Championship for the sixth time last month, has claimed the Kelly Cup Invitational five times, and took the SCGA Tournament of Club Champions twice.
Among others.
“I’ve supported those (local) tournaments my whole golfing career,” said Hogarth, who finished off Kim with an eight-foot birdie putt on the 15th hole and was a total of 14-under-par in the semifinals and final.
In the semifinals, Hogarth got past Ryan Kyaw of Chatsworth, 2 and 1, in his toughest match of the tournament, after downing Hisham Hussein of San Diams, 5 and 4, in the quarterfinals.
Hogarth reached the semifinals of the L.A. City Match Play last year before losing to eventual champion Wooyoung Choi of Anaheim.
Kim, who reached the L.A. City Match Play semifinals last year, knocked off reigning L.A. City champion Damon Krause of Los Angeles on the 21st hole in the quarterfinals on his way to play in the final for the second straight summer.
