Riley Elmes of Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles won the individual title by two strokes and the Lions finished second to Wyoming in the Southern Dunes Invitational at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf in Maricopa, Ariz.
Elmes, a junior from Lake Oswego, Ore., earned his first college victory with a score of 69-65-70—204, 12-under-par, while Brian Humphreys of Boise State was second at 66-71-69—206, followed by Stuart Easton of Western Kentucky at 70-69-70—209, John Murdock of Wyoming at 70-70-71—211 and Aaron Lickteig of Wyoming at 70-79-64—213.
“Riley played outstanding golf,” Loyola Marymount Coach Jason D’Amore said. “12-under on this golf course was so impressive. He is very overdue for this win and we can’t wait to watch the floodgates open for him now.
“Congrats to Wyoming today and their great final round. They had a guy (Lickteig) get really hot. For us to be in the lead and go out and shoot 5-under is very impressive. I’m proud of this group of guys. We continue to get better each event and it’s exciting to be a part of.”
Donny Hopoi of Boise State shot 75-69-70—214 to tie for sixth with Drew McCullough of Wyoming, who totaled 77-69-68—214, Travis Fredborg of Arizona, who was at 72-71-71—214, and William Holcomb of Sam Houston State, who finished at 71-73-70—214.
Matthew Carungay of Loyola carded a score of 76-70-70—216 to tie for 10th with AJ Armstrong of Washington State, who wound up at 70-73-73—216, Mitch Martin of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, who finished at 71-71-74—216, and Daniel Kolar of Washington State, who came in at 73-70-73—216.
Wyoming took the title with a score of 288-289-277—854, 10-under-par, followed by Loyola Marymount at 294-279-283—856, Boise State at 290-290-286—866, Sam Houston State at 293-288-286—867 and Western Kentucky at 301-285-290—876.
Washington State was sixth at 295-288-296—879, followed by Cal Poly (SLO) at 301-288-291—880, Air Force Academy at 303-294-291—888, Utah Valley at 307-294-293—894 and Idaho at 306-312-305—923.
