Cal’s Gutierrez wins at Silverado

Lucia Gutierrez of Cal claimed her first college victory by three strokes in the Silverado Showdown at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa.

Gutierrez, a sophomore Peru, posted a score of 73-71-68–212, 4-under-par, with Esther Lee of Colorado and Los Alamitos finishing second at 67-74-74–215, while Anica Yoo of Oregon State shot 74-78-68–220 to tie for third with Suchaya Tangkamolprasert of Northwestern, who came in at 74-69-67–220.

“It was great to come out here and get my first win,” said Gutierrez, who was second in the BYU Invitational a few weeks ago. “I was able to stick to my game plan and all the things I’ve been working on. Eventually it all came together and I played some great golf.

“I just concentrated shot-by-shot, focused on my mental game and believed in myself. I had the confidence that I could hit the shot and I was sticking the ball close to the pin and making great putts, and making and birdies and pars.

“It’s definitely a boost of confidence and I’m ready to go to (the Pacific 12 Conference Championship) and give it my all.”
