Fourth-ranked Justin Thomas was playing alongside ninth-ranked Rory McIlroy and tournament host Tiger Woods, but it seemed he was on a different course.
The 25-year-old Thomas (pictured) made birdies on seven of the 12 holes he played in the second round of the rain-delayed Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club http://www.therivieracountryclub.com in Pacific Palisades and was tied for the lead with Adam Scott of Australia when darkness halted play.
“My game was really strong,” said Thomas, who had birdies on 14 of his 30 holes. “The only dropped shots I had were because of my driver. I struck the ball well and putted well all day. When I was in trouble, I just tried to get the ball on the green and was able get up-and-down.
“I managed my emotions well and didn’t let the conditions get to me. It’s hard to play 30 holes when it’s cold and wet. My legs are tired and I need to get some rest because it looks like tomorrow will be another long day.”
Thomas, who didn’t hit a shot on Thursday when rain delayed play for seven hours, carded a 5-under 66 in the first round on Friday morning before really heating up in the afternoon by making four straight birdies through No. 17 after starting on the 10th hole.
The leaders were at 10-under for the tournament.
Scott, who won at Riviera in 2005 when rain shortened the tournament to 36 holes, also had a 66 in the first round and made six birdies in the 11 holes he played in round two.
J.B. Holmes made a hole in one on the 182-yard sixth hole en route to a one-stroke lead after the first round with a 63, and was one stroke behind in solo third at 1-under for the day through nine holes in round two and 9-under for the tournament when play ended for the day.
Jordan Spieth finished off a first-round 64 in the morning with a birdie at No. 9 but didn’t hit another shot the rest of the day and was three shots back in a tie for fourth with Luke List, who opened with an even-par 71 and was 7-under through 15 in round two, which included a hole-out eagle from 54 yards on the second hole.
Sixth-ranked Jon Rahm of Spain opened with a 67 and was 1-under for round two and 5-under for the tournament, which left him one more behind in a tie for seventh with Vaughn Taylor (67, 1-under for 10 holes in round two), Si Woo Kim of South Korea (68, 2-under through 10) and Scott Langley (69, 3-under through 10).
Patrick Rodgers of Stanford, Tony Finau and Kramer Hickock, who all shot 66 in round one and didn’t start round two, also were in the tie for seventh.
Fifth-ranked Bryson DeChambeau of Clovis opened with a 70 and was 3-under through 13 holes to get to 5-under for the tournament and a tie for 14th, McIlroy (70, 3-under for 12 holes in round two) was tied for 23rd and Woods (70, even for 12 holes) was tied for 55th.
Defending champion Bubba Watson, trying to win the tournament for the fourth time in six years, opened with a 71 and also was tied for 55th while waiting to start round two.
Two-time Riviera champion Phil Mickelson shot 72 in round one and is tied for 90th, top-ranked Dustin Johnson is tied for 73rd after a 73 and seventh-ranked Xander Schauffele of La Jolla and San Diego State shot 74 and is tied for 123rd. None of the three started round two.
