Svard, CSU San Marcos take home titles

Elis Svard of Cal State Monterey Bay claimed the individual title for the second straight year by one stroke and host Cal State San Marcos captured the team championship, also by one shot, in the Cal State San Marcos Fujikura Invitational at Shadowridge Country Club in San Marcos.

The Cougars posted a score of 286-294-295—875, 11-over-par, followed by Chico State at 290-287-299—876 and Cal State Monterey Bay at 294-297-295—886.

California Baptist totaled 295-297-297—889 to tie for fourth with Stanislaus State, which finished at 293-301-295—889, while UC San Diego wound up at 298-293-303—894 to tie for sixth with Sonoma State, which came in at 295-309-290—894.

Western New Mexico was eighth at 307-297-299—903, followed by Cal State San Bernardino at 307-294-308—909, California Lutheran at 310-304-301—915, La Verne at 306-302-310—918 and Redlands at 315-302-304—921.

Biola was 14th at 310-315-314—939, followed by Cal State Dominguez Hills at 329-310-306—945.

Svard, a sophomore from Sweden, posted a score of 68-70-71—209, 7-under par, while Chris Tuulik of Cal State San Marcos was second at 70-66-74—210, followed by Josh McCollum of Chico State at 71-70-73—214 and Dexter Simonds of Sonoma State at 70-72-73—215.

“I’m proud of Elis for persevering and getting the win,” Otters Coach Jason Owen said after Svard pulled even with a birdie on the 17th hole and won with a closing par when Tuulik finished with a bogey.

Kelley Sullivan of Chico State shot 73-71-72—216 to tie for fifth with Adam Navigato of UC San Diego, who finished at 73-74-69—216, while Tim Sauer of Stanislaus State totaled 72-73-74—219 to tie for seventh with Ryan Monsalve of California Baptist, who wound up at 71-72-76—219.

Ben Hallam of California Baptist carded a score of 75-78-68—221 to tie for ninth with Jeff Yamaguchi of Stanislaus State (76-75-70—221), Tristan Stone of Cal State San Bernardino (78-69-74—221), Hisham Hussein of La Verne (75-74-72—221), Tyler Ferrier of Cal Lutheran (75-75-71—221), Sam Ruston of Western New Mexico (76-68-77—221.

Cade Lawson led Redlands finished at 78-77-72—227 in a tie for 23rd that also included Parker Buck of Biola University at 75-75-77—227, while Raynard Belmonte of Cal State Dominguez Hills tied for 39th at 83-74-74—231.
