Peters wins 53rd NCGA Publinx title in playoff

Ben Peters of Redwood City made par on the first playoff hole to defeat Ned Jensen of San Francisco and win the 53rd Northern California Golf Association Public Links Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.

The 33-year-old Peters carded a score of 70-59—139, 3-under-par, while Jensen, who missed a four-foot par putt that would have extended the playoff, finished at 71-68—139.

“It’s been my goal,” said Peters, who captured the 2016 Santa Rosa City Championship and the 2017 Santa Cruz City Championship. “Coming from playing in a few USGA championships to be able to play in NCGA championships, and then to eventually win one was the next goal. To have it happen this quickly in the year is pretty phenomenal.

“I’ve played with Nick before, and have beaten him before, so I knew I had a chance. “I’ve wanted to win an NCGA championship for 10 years. Now to have my name on the trophy, it’s so special. It’s a huge confidence builder to know I can get it done when I need to.”

Garett Wagner of Hayward was third at 70-70-140, followed by Michael Slesinski of Fremont at 71-71—141, while three time NCGA Public Links champion Nick Moore of Monterey shot 68-77—145 to tie for fifth with Keith Okasaki of Sacramento, who also wound up at 68-77—145.

Matt Cohn of San Francisco was seventh at 72-74—146, followed by Troy Armstrong of Salinas at 73-75—148, Taylor Daniels of Auburn at 74-75—149, and J.R. Warthen of Pismo Beach at 81-70—151.
