Antonia Malate of Seaside sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to win the Northern California Golf Association Women’s Amateur Championship by one stroke over Arielle Swan-Smith of Sunnyvale at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach.
Malate, who won the 2016 San Leandro City Amateur Championship and the 2018 Monterey Bay League Championship as a senior at Robert Louis Stevenson High in Carmel, carded a score of 75-79—154, while Swan-Smith finished at 78-77—155.
“Playing with college players and just experiencing the pressure, it helps me a lot as I get ready to play at the next level,” said Malate, a recent graduate of Robert Louis Stevenson who is headed for San Jose State.
“I had to keep my mental game together even though I was putting badly. My caddy helped me through it and I just toughed it out.”
Rei Nakatani of Japan and UC Davis totaled 82-76—158 to tie for third with Sydney Burlison of Salinas, who finished at 78-80—158, Samantha Hutchison of San Jose and UC Davis, who wound up at 77-81—158, Clare Brady of Campbell and Chico State, who also came in at 77-81—158.
Yonjee Kimm of Danville was seventh at 78-81—159, followed by Cristina Picariello of San Jose and Sonoma State at 85-75—160, whole Jasimine Monas of Cameron Park and Sonoma State totaled 80-81—161 to tie for 10th with Noor Ahmed of Folsom and Nebraska, who finished at 79-82—161.
Jennifer Douglas of Granite Bay captured the California Women’s Senior Amateur Championship by one stroke over Sally Krueger of San Francisco.
Douglas shot 79-74—153, 9-over, while Krueger finished at 77-77—154.
Patricia Cornett of San Francisco was third at 79-79—158, followed by Julie Wirth of Moraga at 85-74—159 and Tina Barker of Fairfield at 81-79—150.
Deborah Robertson of Martinez was sixth at 80-84—164, followed by Diana Tan of Oakland at 80-86—186, Lydia Hammock of Danville at 88-82—169, Kelly Simpson of Livermore at 89-85—174 and Jennifer Noonan of Pacific Grove at 87-89—176.
