Cal Poly San Luis Obispo claimed its first Big West Conference Women’s Golf Championship by one stroke over defending champion UC Riverside, and Martina Edberg of Cal State Fullerton won the individual title for the second time at Oak Quarry Golf Club in Riverside.
Cal Poly (SLO) posted a winning total of 289-298-300–887, 23-over-par, followed by UC Riverside at 296-303-289–888, Hawaii at 303-298-292–893, UC Davis at 297-300-297–894 and Cal State Fullerton at 302-306-290–898.
Long Beach State was sixth at 311-290-298–899, followed by UC Irvine at 302-302-301–905 and Cal State Northridge at 305-306-305–916.
“We came out on fire this morning with birdies early on from everyone,” Coach Sofie Aagaard said of the Mustangs’ second victory of the season. “Midway through the day, things slowed down. Nerves set in and Riverside starting making birdies and an eagle.
“Our team kept its composure, kept hitting fairways and greens, and came through with what was needed. I’m very proud of them all and excited to represent Cal Poly and the Big West Conference at the NCAA Regionals in a couple of weeks.”
Edberg, a senior from Sweden, carded a score of 71-68-71–210, 5-under, to claim her sixth victory of the season by one stroke over Jakeishya Le of UC Riverside, who finished at 70-73-68–211, while Isabella Leung of Hawaii was third at 72-75-70–217, followed by Jamie Binns of Cal Poly at 71-74-73–218.
Edberg also won the title as a freshman in 2014.
Jennifer Yu of Long Beach State was fifth at 75-72-72–219, followed by Kaley In of UC Irvine at 75-72-74–221, while Christine Danielsson of UC Davis shot 75-72-75–222 to tie for seventh with Mallory Muehlbauer of Cal Poly, who totaled 72-75-75–222.
Euna Pak of Long Beach State was ninth at 75-73-75–223, and Janet Yeo of UC Irvine wound up at 73-75-76–224 to tie for 10th with Ysabel Tran of Cal State Northridge, who shot 72-73-79–224, Desiree Gillaspy of Cal Poly, who finished at 71-81-72–224, and
Samantha Hutchison of UC Davis, who came in at 77-71-76–224.
Rounding out the scoring for victorious Cal Poly were Sophie Bergland in 21st at 79-
69-80–228 and Jamie Harada in a tie for 34th at 75-80-80–235.
