Patrick Rodgers birdied his last four holes before darkness halted play and was one stroke ahead of first-round leader Patton Kizzire and Rickie Fowler in the second round of the rain-delayed OHL Classic at Mayakoba at El Camaleon Golf Club in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
The were 47 players still on the course who were scheduled to return return Saturday morning to complete the second round, but more rain prevented that and tournament officials hoped to continue later in the day.
The 25-year-old Rodgers, who opened with a 4-under-par 67, collected three birdies on the back nine after starting on the 10th hole and reached 11-under for the tournament through 16 holes before holes before the end came.
Rodgers, who shares the Stanford record of 11 victories with Tiger Woods and Maverick McNealy, was at 7-under for the tournament and was the only player in the field yet to make a bogey.
His only pro victory came in the 2015 Pacific Rubiales Colombia Championship on the Web.com Tour.
Kizzire, who opened with a sizzling 62, followed that up with a 70, and Fowler, from Murrieta, was 4-under on his round after 15 holes following an opening 65.
Brian Gay eagled the 15th hole en route to a bogey-free 65 and was two shots back in a tie for fourth with Brandon Harkins, who shot 68 despite three bogeys down the stretch.
Martin Piller, who started with a 66, made birdies on his first four holes and was 3-under through nine holes and three back in solo sixth, while Si Woo Kim of South Korea totaled 68 and was one more down in a tie for seventh with Oscar Fraustro of Mexico, who had a 66.
Beau Hossler of Rancho Santa Margarita shot 66 and is five strokes behind in a tie for ninth with Alex Cejka (67) of Germany, Anirban Lahiri (69) of India, Kevin Streelman (68), Russell Knox (68) of Scotland, Roberto Diaz (65) of Mexico, Retief Goosen (70) of South Africa and Chez Reavie (69).
Still on the course and also in the tie for ninth were Scott Brown, who was 2-under for the day after 17 holes, Ken Duke, who was 3-under after 16, and Fabian Gomez of Argentina, who was 1-under after 13.
Defending champion Pat Perez of San Diego was tied for 69th after a 74.
