LPGA introduces ANNIKA award

The LPGA Tour and Rolex announced that the best player in the women’s majors for each season will be presented the Rolex ANNIKA Major Award.

The announcement of the award named in honor of 10-time major champion Annika Sorenstam of Sweden came on the eve of the first major of the year, the Kraft Nabisco Championship on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

“I have always felt performances in major championships define players’ careers,” said Sorenstam, who won 89 times in her career and completed the Career Grant Slam in 2003, when she captured the Wegmans LPGA Championship and the RICOH Women’s British Open.

“To establish this prestigious award with both my longtime partner, Rolex, and the LPGA is a tremendous honor.”

Among those present at the press conference were Inbee Park of South Korea, who captured the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the U.S. Women’s Open and the Wegmans LPGA Championship last year, and Stacy Lewis, who won the RICOH Women’s British Open.

The award will be presented after the Evian Championship, which in 2013 became the fifth LPGA Tour major, in September at Evian Resort Club in Evian-les-Bains, France.
