Host Chico State wins Wildcat Classic

Jordan Oliver and Christopher Colla of Chico State made decisive birdies on the closing holes and Colby Dean claimed the individual title as the host Wildcats captured the InterWest Wildcat Classic by two strokes over Cal State Monterey Bay at The Links at Rolling Hills in Corning, Calif.

The Wildcats, No. 15 in the NCAA Division II rankings after winning the Sonoma State Invitational by 17 strokes to start the season, have won four of their last five home tournaments and six of the last nine.

Chico State posted a score of 286-282—568, 8-under-par, while 14th-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay was second at 289-281—570, followed by Holy Names of Oakland at 295-280—575, Cal State East Bay at 289-289—578 and Sonoma State at 293-291—584.

UC San Diego was sixth at 303-289—592, followed at Dominican of San Rafael at 300-294—594, Cal State San Marcos at 312-297—609, Whittier at 313-308–621 Cal State Dominguez Hills at 310-312—622 and Chico State’s B team at 314-311—625.

Dean, who finished second in the Sonoma State Invitational, claimed the second victory of his career with a score of 67-70—137, followed by Elis Svard of Cal State Monterey Bay at 71-67—138, and Zack Sims of Holy Names at 72-67—139.

Kelley Sullivan of Chico State shot 70-70—140 to tie for fourth with Adam Navigato of UC San Diego, who totaled 71-69—140, and Kyle McLay of Holy Names, who finished at 74-66—140.

Will Barnett of Cal State East Bay was seventh at 72-69—141, followed by Nick Rivera of Dominican at 71-71—142, while Martin Westerlund of Cal State Monterey Bay wound up at 72-71—143 to tie for ninth with teammate Edward Hackett, who totaled 73-70—143, and Dexter Simonds of Sonoma State, who came in at 73-70—143.

Tyler Bliss led Whittier in a tie for 18th at 77-70—147, while William Yang of Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 75-74—149 to finish in a tie for 23rd that included Jordan McBrayer of Cal State San Marcos, who finished at 76-73—149.

Oliver finished 13th for Chico State at 72-73—145, and Colla totaled 77-69—146 to tie for 14th with Wildcat teammate Grant Leppek, who came in at 73-73—146.
