Greenbrier Classic canceled by flood damage

The PGA Tour announced along with officials of the Greenbrier Resort on Saturday that the Greenbrier Classic, scheduled for July 7-10, has been canceled because of massive flooding caused by record rainfall throughout West Virginia.

The Old White TPC, host course of the tournament in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., sustained extensive damage and could not be repaired in time to hold the tournament.

“We are heartbroken by the devastation that the residents of West Virginia are experiencing at this time and the reports of lives lost due to the terrible flooding,” commissioner Tim Finchem of the PGA Tour said.

“Cancelling the Greenbrier Classic is certainly the most prudent course of action as our foremost concern is the well-being of those who are having to live through this tragic situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”

Greenbrier County is one of the areas hit hardest by the rains.

The Greenbrier Classic was first played in 2010 and two years ago resort officials signed a six-year extension to host the tournament through 2021.

“All of our focus needs to be on helping all of the people of our great State,” said Jim Justice, owner of The Greenbrier. “So many have lost loved ones, their homes, and have no place to go.”

Stuart Appleby of Australia won the first Greenbrier Classic in 2010 and last year Danny Lee of New Zealand beat Robert Streb, Kevin Kisner and David Hearn of Canada in a playoff.
