Cowan wins 40th California Sr. Women’s Am

Lynne Cowan of Rocklin sank a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to beat Lara Tennant of Portland, Ore., and win the 40th California Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at Quail Lodge Golf Club in Carmel.

The 55-year-old Cowan, who also won the title in 2014 and 2015, noticed her hand was trembling as she held her rangefinder on the playoff hole, but she wasn’t nervous.

“I was hungry,” said Cowan, who has low blood sugar. “I just wanted to finish playing so I could eat something.

“I had a lot of looks at birdies today and I dropped a couple of long ones. The best one was in the playoff, though. (Tennant) showed me the line. Every big putt I needed I made today.”

Cowan posted a score of 77-72—147, 5-over-par, while Tennant, who missed a birdie putt from a few feet outside Cowan on the playoff hole, wound up at 75-74—149.

Kathy Kurata of Pasadena was third at 75-75—150, followed by Corey Weworski of Carlsbad, who won the title the last two years, at 73-78—151, and Evelyn Orley of Cardiff at 77-76—153.

Caryn Wilson of Rancho Mirage was sixth at 80-74—154, followed by Sally Krueger of San Francisco at 76-79—155, Lisa Smego of Oro Valley, Ariz., at 75-81—156, Marianne Towersey of Pebble Beach at 77-80—157 and Patricia Cornett of Mill Valley at 82-78—160.

Towersey, who won the title in 2002 and six straight times from 2004-09, claimed the Super Senior Championship title this time with her score of 77-80—150.
