Scott Kramer – For the past decade, Nike Golf has “scripted” its athletes at major championships. “Scripting” is a process in which the company’s apparel team works with its athletes in mapping out what each athlete will wear during each of their competitive rounds.

“We work with our athletes a year in advance to determine what they will wear in each of the majors,” said Doug Reed, Nike Golf’s Global Category Business Director for Apparel and Footwear. “We sit down with them, present the upcoming new styles for each season and listen to what the athlete needs as it relates to performance, technology, comfort and style. From there, we collaborate with the athlete to determine what they will wear.”

The Nike Athletes in the field at The Masters include Paul Casey, Kevin Chappell, Stewart Cink, Simon Dyson, Ross Fisher, Lucas Glover, Francesco Molinari, defending champion Charl Schwartzel and Tiger Woods – all will be wearing the newest styles from the 2012 Spring Apparel Collection. These athletes have been scripted with designs that match their style and attitude, utilizing spring’s variety of colors and patterns.

Schwartzel will wear the Tour Premium collection for the first two rounds and switch to the Tour Performance Collection for the weekend. On Saturday, he will wear the Modern Stripe polo in Prism Blue and the Modern Color Block Polo in Blackened Heather on Sunday to replicate the all-black look from his final round last year.

As part of the Nike Tour Performance line, Woods will wear bold colors, stripes and gradient patterns from the Tiger Woods Collection and bring the latest technology to his Sunday Red with the Nike Ultra Lite Polo (MSRP $90).

Highlights from the Nike Tour Performance line that will be seen at the Masters are the men’s Fractured Jacquard polo (MSRP $70), Stretch UV Stripe Polo (MSRP $70) and the Modern Color Block polo (MSRP $60) in eye-catching spring colors. These polos are constructed of Nike Dri-FIT with UV protection and added stretch to ease the golf swing.

Simon Dyson will be showcasing the Nike Sport Line for the entire week. Nike Golf’s new Sport line features bold and stylish designs with a slim fit. Highlighting the youthful style of Nike Sport, Dyson will be wearing four distinct looks, including the iconic Nike Sport Colorblock polo (MSRP $65).

To round out the athletes look at Augusta National, a limited edition Lunar Control shoe has been designed to commemorate The Masters tournament. This Nike Limited Edition Lunar Control shoe (MSRP $150) features premium full-grain waterproof leather enhanced with classic brogue details on the vamp and quarter. The Nike Lunarlon cushioning pops in green on the all-white shoe that also includes stealthy Nike Flywire technology. A patent leather Swoosh is outlined in detailed green stitching.

With so many new clubs hitting the market in 2012, it can be difficult to figure out which gear fits your game the best. In this article we break down the techo-speak and what we like about the hottest new irons from the game’s leading brands.

TaylorMade RocketBallz

Price: $899.99
Technically Speaking: The 3,4 and 5 irons feature a two-peice metalwood-inspired construction that creates a low center of gravity and high COR. The face of the club has been re-engineered with a new Toe-Bar that promotes straighter shots by controlling face-flexion.
Why We Like It: The new vibration and sound control system gives the TaylorMade Rocketballz irons an excellent sound and feel.

Titleist AP1 712

Price: $799.99
Technically Speaking: The AP1 irons from Titleist have an increased MOI, providing a solid feel and forgiveness with longer irons without sacrificing shot-control.
Why We Like It: Three shaft options are available to choose from specializing in distance, spin rate and launch angle.

Mizuno MP-59

Price: $999.99
Technically Speaking: The MP-59 irons from Mizuno are made of Grain Flow Forged 1025E “Pure Select” mild carbon steel and pure titanium. Forged Ti Muscle Technology promotes a solid feel on contact and increased forgiveness.
Why We Like It: The lightweight pure titanium places the optimal amount of thickness behind the impact area, while at the same time providing additional perimeter weighting for ideal playability.

Cleveland 588 CB

Price: $999.99
Technically Speaking: The 588 CB irons from Cleveland Golf are precision forged from 1025 carbon steel and feature a progressive cavity back as well as an increased blade length.
Why We Like It: A thicker topline and more offset inspire confidence upon impact. The 588 CB irons are incredibly soft, yet still provide the solid feel sought by experienced players.

Callaway RAZR X Black

Price: $799.99
Technically Speaking: RAZR Technology redistributes weight in the back cavity, creating a lower, deeper center of gravity that promotes distance as well as forgiveness. The VFT Power System increases ball speed.
Why We Like It: The black PVD finish on the RAZR X Black irons reduces glare and produces an appealing and distinct look.

Cobra AMP

Price: $699.99
Technically Speaking: The new V-Skid Sole Design is a versatile mid-width sole that gets increasingly narrow in both the toe and heel of the club, promoting accuracy and consistency when it comes to both distance and shot placement.
Why We Like It: The Advanced Materal Placement (AMP) strategically positions weight to support distance in long irons and consistency in short irons.

It’s a new year, which means lots of new woods, hybrids, irons, wedges and golf balls are hitting the market. Whether they hit the mark with you requires some homework … and testing, of course. In The following weeks we will talk about some of the hottest gear coming out in 2012 from TaylorMade, Titleist, Cleveland, Callaway, Cobra, Ping, Nike, Tour Edge, Adams, Mizuno, Srixon and Bridgestone.

The science behind the equipment is constantly evolving, but we’re here to help by breaking it down into two parts – techo-speak and why the item is cool and might be perfect for your game.

First up? Drivers of course! Let’s go shopping.

Cleveland Classic 270

Price: $299.99
Tech Talk: The Classic 270 driver boasts the largest and deepest club face ever produced by Cleveland Golf. The large face combined with MaxCOR2 technology provides a driver with maximum distance and excellent forgiveness.
Why We Like It: The unique sole design and color scheme give the driver a neat, retro look. The club has a total weight of just 270 grams, helping to increase club speed and overall distance.

TaylorMade R11S

Price: $399.99
Tech Talk: The R11S allows golfers to adjust loft with Flight Control Technology, face angle with Adjustable Sole Plate Technology and center of gravity location with Movable Weight Technology.
Why We Like It: The incredibly large 460cc titanium head with Thick-Thin Crown design provides a lower center of gravity, while Inverted Cone Technology gives players increased ball speed on off-center shots.

Callaway RAZR FIT

Price: $399.99
Tech Talk: The OptiFit Hosel allows players to adjust the face angle of the club, improving accuracy and trajectory. The OptiFit weights move the center of gravity of the clubhead to promote either draw or neutral ball flights.
Why We Like It: The sleek, aerodynamic surface decreases energy loss from downswing drag by 14% in comparison to the RAZR Hawk drive. This gives the RAZR FIT a higher impact speed and greater distance.

Ping i20

Price: $349.99
Tech Talk: The Ping i20 features a 460cc head built from Ti 8-1-1, a light, low-density alloy that improves forgiveness by providing optimal weight forgiveness. The crown of the club is engineered to reduce drag to help maximize clubhead speed and velocity.
Why We Like It: The dense tungsten sole weights position the center of gravity of the club for longer, more accurate drives with low-spin and a penetrating trajectory.

Nike VR-S

Price: $359.99
Tech Talk: The Nike VR-S utilizes NexCOR face technology that features a new multi-face thickness design engineered to enhance speed for a wide range of golfers.
Why We Like It: The longer, lighter 45.75” Fubuki shaft helps generate more swing speed and the adjustable face-angle puts more control in the hands of the player.

Cobra AMP

Price: $299.99
Tech Talk: The AMP driver from Cobra has a 30% larger sweet spot using its new E9 Face Technology with Dual Roll design that provides consistency and increased distance.
Why We Like It: The face-angle can be adjusted to three settings (open, neutral and closed), allowing golfers to control ball flight and accuracy with greater ease.

TaylorMade’s RocketBallz 3-wood ($229) comes with a legal claim that it can get you 17 extra yards, compared to your old 3-wood. It’s no wonder: The 200cc clubhead has 15 degrees of loft. In fact, you might consider replace your driver with it. A sole slot enhances playability and feel, while a 50-gram shaft adds speed. And it performs even smoother — the 460cc all-titanium driver hits the ball forever, partly thanks to the ultralite Miyazaki graphite shaft. Visit clevelandgolf.com

The year is almost over, which means new equipment models have begun showing up for 2012.

Black Irons
Cleveland Golf’s new Black Irons ($129) feature a high-strength Ti club face that promotes distance through being both larger and thinner. The lower, deeper center of gravity provides optimal spin and a higher launch angle. The Lamkin Lite grip and Miyazaki C. Kua 59 graphite shaft increase swing speed by reducing overall weight.

Long Tom Driver
Cobra’s Long Tom Driver ($349) is a lightweight model that’s 48 inches long. It sports the company’s elliptical E9 sweetspot clubface with bulge and dual roll, and an ultralight shaft. Its titanium alloy clubface aims to generate more ball speed, with help from a low-and-deep CG.

XCG5 Driver
The Exotics XCG5 driver ($329.99) from Tour Edge boasts a titanium face and body, ultra-thin beta titanium crown, and three lightweight shaft options – one of which decreases the driver’s total weight to just 271 grams. And that translates to extra distance off the tee.

adiSTREET Shoe
The new adiSTREET shoe ($90) from adidas Golf boasts a durable and lightweight upper, and abrasion-resistant toe cap. The shoe, which can be worn both on and off the course, has exceptional footing despite being cleat-free due to a soft outsole that bears 124 traction lugs.

California Fastback Putter
Scotty Cameron by Titleist’s California Fastback putter ($375) is a modified Newport-style mid mallet with a head that’s smaller from heel-to-toe. It also sports a rounded back flange. A near face-balanced model with three sight lines, it has a single-bend shaft with a full-shaft offset.

M-Series Irons
KZG’s M-Series irons ($129 and up, depending on shaft) consists of three models that can be mixed and matched. The ME-I, MA-I and MO-I vary in head size, are triple forged for soft feel, and CNC milled for accuracy. Their top line, aesthetics, lie, loft, weight, offset and bounce are compatible for seamless progression

Chamber Cart Bag
OGIO’s Chamber cart bag ($300) has 14 club slots equipped with a protective membrane to center and hold the club’s shaft. Best of all, it eliminates clanking. A compression-fit mechanism bottom adds stability, while a zipper-less ball pocket makes one-handed access to contents a cinch.

Kusala White Shaft
Miyazaki’s Kusala White shaft ($249) for woods is available in weights of 56, 61, 72 and 83 grams. It’s ideal for low-ball hitters seeking a higher ball launch with reduced spin. Feel is enhanced by slightly more torque.

712 CB Forged Irons
Titleist’s 712 CB forged irons ($165/graphite, $140/steel) promise improved, more-solid feel, due to mass behind the impact area. A slightly wider cambered sole smooths turf interaction, while the satin finish reduces glare.

Keegan Bradley, PGA Championship

Keegan Bradley, a 25-year-old American rookie, came back from five shots down with just three holes remaining to force a three-hole playoff and eventually claim victory at the PGA Championship over Jason Dufner. Here’s a closer look at some of the Cleveland Golf products that helped Bradley successfully pull off the comeback:

Launcher TL310 Driver 9.5°

The Launcher TL310 was created with Ultralite Technology, removing excess weight from the club without taking away from its flexibility or swing-weight. The lighter, longer club provides faster head speed, which in turn increases ball speed and overall distance. The driver comes with a Miyazaki C. Kua 59 series shaft that favors better, stronger golfers.

Launcher FL Fairway 3 Wood

Cleveland Golf, Miyazaki Premium Golf Shafts and Lamkin Grips worked together to strategicallyremove weight from both the shaft and grip of the Launcher FL Fairway. After cutting the overall weight by 30 grams, the result was a light, yet balanced, club. Three fitting options (13°, 15°, and 17°) allow golfers to choose between low, mid, and high trajectory.

Srixon Z-Star Ball

The Z-Star Ball got it’s first major win at the PGA Championship. The proprietary urethane cover is incredibly soft for above-average spin control and excellent distance. STAR Performance technology helps the Z-Star maximize spin, trajectory, acceleration and responsiveness. The ball is best suited for golfers with driver swing speeds between 80mph and 105mph.

I’ve been playing this stupid game for nearly 40 years now and, despite my moments of brilliance (maybe a slight exaggeration) over that period, I found out that I was doing it with the wrong clubs the whole time.

I guess I am as dumb as I look.

The nice folks at TaylorMade Golf invited me down recently for a fitting and to try their new R11 driver. You know, that bright, white club that nearly everyone on the PGA Tour is hitting these days and that every mere mortal who plays this game wants under their Christmas tree this winter.

I jumped at the chance since I have never gone through a club fitting and my driver, despite performing admirably for nearly five years now, was obviously obsolete in this new age of supreme technology.

After getting loosened up at their swank practice facility at Aviara Golf Club, I was greeted by Tom Fisher, a lovely chap from England and one of TaylorMade’s fitting specialists. Fisher and I discussed a variety of options in club selections, and then he asked me to hit a few shots so he could start dissecting my game.

Well, as if the stars were aligned, I started creasing one six-iron after another, making Fisher feel as though I actually had some talent. But, as my game often does, I started pulling my shots a little too far left.

Fortunately, Fisher told me not to worry.

Fisher then took me inside and hooked me up in black armor, sensors attached to nearly every joint on my body. These sensors are designed to detect every move the body makes, from nearly every angle: top, bottom, behind, swing plane, etc.

After hitting five or six shots with a variety of clubs, I was offered a viewing of my swing. Well, to nobody’s surprise, it was revealed that my swing had a few flaws. The results, however, were consistent with my ball-striking on the range. That is, I was taking my club a little too much to the inside on my takeaway, which caused my ball flight to go right-to-left a little more than desired…he did say that my trajectory had some of the same characteristics as Kenny Perry, only not so drastic. I could live with that as I’ve worked hard over the years to rid myself of a persistent fade.

To give me greater perspective, they aligned my image up with that of Fred Funk and Dustin Johnson. The one consistency was that they were not as upright at address as I was and their finishes were much more complete. The most enlightening part, though, was to understand exactly where I needed to make adjustments if I wanted more consistency.

After a few more shots, Fisher gave me two choices…either work on my backswing so it didn’t come to the inside as much or keep my swing and flatten my lie by 1.5 degrees on my irons as the toe of my clubs were slightly elevated at address, accentuating my draw into an occasional hook. In other words, my “off the rack” set of irons were not right for me at all. Fisher quickly reached into a TaylorMade golf bag filled with about 30 different clubs, plucked the appropriate club and, abracadabra, Larry Feldman, aspiring Champions Tour professional, was back hitting six-irons 170 yards and straight.

Fisher then asked me to describe the wedges in my bag. I told him I had four: pitching, 52, 56 and 60 degree, and that I consistently hit my 60 degree fat. He told me there would now be three wedges in my bag and the reason I was hitting the one wedge fat was my bounce factor was incorrect. He prescribed 53 and 58 degree wedges with a high bounce, which would cover nearly any distance needed through my pitching wedge and that fat shots would be a thing of the past.

From there, we ventured to the dreaded 3-iron. When I told him that I preferred an easy five-metal, he slapped a new TaylorMade Rescue club in my hands. All I can say is, “Rescue me!”

We then moved down the bag to fairway woods, where I demoed the new R11 3- and 5-woods. I highly recommend this new technology for the low and high handicapper alike.

Then, the moment of truth arrived.

Fisher unveiled Taylor Made’s “White Lightning”, as I like to call it. The R11 Driver. I was so excited, you’d think I just saw Megan Fox!

Well, it was that and everything more. The ball literally jumped off the club face. No wonder why Dustin Johnson launches it by everyone. Sign me up. And, since Taylor Made now has a number of fitting centers all across the country, I highly recommend a visit before your next round of golf.

The only problem I have, now that I have been perfectly fitted by TaylorMade Golf, is that I am virtually out of excuses when I play poorly. Oh well, I’ve been blaming everything in sight for years now, I guess it’s time I started owning up to my shortcomings.

Fore!

The driving game has become a story of speed. That is, golfers are looking for a slow backswing, fast clubhead speed through the impact zone, and a rocket-like ball speed as it leaves the driver face. All of this translates to a longer drive.

Club manufacturers can’t help you slow down your backswing, but they can do a lot about getting you more clubhead and ball speed. So this year, several major companies have paid detailed attention to their marquee drivers, to help you maximize tee-shot distance – even if you don’t necessarily hit it on the sweet spot.

Technology has allowed engineers to toy with materials old and new, produce clubfaces that are thinner than ever, employ state-of-the-art welding processes, precisely alter weighting positions, carefully sculpt clubhead shapes, and implement inventive adjustment mechanisms – all in the name of helping you increase clubhead speed as you come into the ball at impact. That starts the domino effect: The more clubhead speed you generate, the higher the ball velocity is as it leaves the clubface, and the further your shot travels. The basic rule of thumb is that for every mile per hour you increase clubhead speed, you get nearly three more yards of distance.

That’s why this year’s crop of drivers is well worth trying. They’ll absolutely help maximize your tee shot distance – regardless of your handicap or ability.
