Scheffler lands Genesis Open spot at Riviera

Scottie Scheffler, a senior from Dallas at the University of Texas, shot 3-under-par 68 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades to capture the Genesis Open Collegiate Showcase by six strokes.

Scheffler, who was low amateur at last year’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills, earned a spot in the PGA Tour’s Genesis Open, which begins Thursday at Riviera.

“It will be awesome to be a part of this field,” said Scheffler, who played in the first group of the day alongside Jordan Spieth, a former Texas All-American who is ranked third in the world.

“To be a part of the history of this tournament is going to be really special and I’m really looking forward to it.”
Doug Ghim and Spencer Soosman, Sheffler’s teammates at Texas, posted 74s to tie for second with Lukas Euler of Kentucky, while Justin Suh and Carl Yuan of Washington tied for fifth at 75.

Previous winners of the Genesis Open Collegiate Challenge were Will Zalatoris of Wake Forest in 2015, Charlie Danielson of Illinois in 2016 and Sahith Theegala of Pepperdine in last year.

Theegala not only made the cut last year, but finished with a 72-hole total of 2-under and tied for 49th while playing alongside Phil Mickelson and J.B. Holmes in the final round.
